Overall Background

This project aims at designing a customized tangible virtual reality (VR) controller for a more immersive and enjoyable VR flight simulator experience. This study implemented a preliminary test and a playtest with a post-play questionnaire, recording players’ intuitive responses to the controllers and their gameplay experience in the VR game with the customized controller. The researcher designed and improved the VR game as well as the controller based on the feedback from his observations and the analysis of responses of the questionnaire. It is shown that the customized controller in a VR game which complies more with players’ intuitiveness improves the controller naturalness and further enhances the players’ level of immersion and enjoyment as well as their overall gameplay experience. Implications in practical game design and future directions are also discussed.
